Today I want to shine a ‘spotlight’ on one of my personal all time favourite tracks. Perfect Day is a track from 2016 released by deM atlaS under the Rhymesayers Entertainment label. He is an artist from Minnesota who released his debut EP in 2013 and has only continued to grow as an artist since then.
This track uses an instrumental beat from MF Doom’s Special Herbs Volumes under his moniker Metal Fingers. The beat by itself is such a soulful, jazzy beat, that causes happiness and is extremely uplifting. No sad times will be had listening to this beat.
Somehow deM atlaS manages to make this beat even more uplifting and inspiring with his unique and beautiful lyrics and skill set. He starts off this song testing his vocal chords which fits perfectly with the beat, then starts singing the intro which sets the tone and subject of this track perfectly:
“If I die today. It’s gonna be the best day I’ve ever had”
The first verse is where deM atlaS shines as an artist, where he speaks with a mix of rap ability and soulful singing. It is something that I have come across very few times before and I find it beautiful to listen to. He speaks about living life to the fullest and not worrying about the thoughts of others, that you should “enjoy yourself, laugh at yourself and everything will be alright. Alright?” This is how people should live their lives to get the most out of it as we don’t know when our last day is.
His second verse follows the same style and carries on the live life train of thought. This time he is talking to a girl trying to pick her up saying that she shouldn’t worry about what other people think or what they are doing as its irrelevant:
“Whatcha doing now whatcha doing now? I’m a fool for y’all”
His third verse is where he switches things up and takes on a more traditional rap style. This is great and a bit more fast paced and upbeat yet still fits perfectly with what the track is all about. He talks about not being able to make time move forward at a faster rate so you should live in the moment. He says that you have to start something to be able to continue. This verse also ends with one of my favourite quotes:
“No one can bring me down, except myself”
The song then heads towards its finish with a bridge that is just beautiful in all senses:
“‘Cuz I’m sick of being tired and wasted, feeling like my dream the only girl I am chasing. My mind like the rolls and vases. I wish that I could fly, I say what’s up with the day, before I fade away”
The beat then kicks up into overdrive while deM atlaS and others repeat the intro and creates an amazing finale to this track that is for sure to break a smile in all.
A quick last word before my summary as it has to be talked about, and that is the music video. This music video is truly uplifting. He starts off in a job he hates and quits before the first verse starts. He then proceeds to walk (and dance) down the street whilst living life to the fullest and making a day perfect. It perfectly sums up the track.
So to all of those of you reading this who have slept on this song, please go listen to it, I will repping this track to the end. It will be the best thing you do today, what are you waiting for? Go live life.
